In his statement, Hong Myung-bo announced his decision to step down as the head coach of the national team. He sincerely apologized to the Korean people and admitted that he could no longer lead the national team.
The coach stated that not every decision he made could be judged as correct. The primary reason for his resignation was the team's failure to achieve the goals set for the World Cup.
Hong Myung-bo admitted that managing the national team was not an easy task. He noted that he could not claim every decision he made was right.
He stated that they failed to achieve the expected results and that he takes full responsibility for this. At the same time, he emphasized that his love for Korean football remains unchanged and that he will continue to support the national team in the future.
South Korea collected three points in the group stage. However, this result was not enough to advance to the next stage.
Although the team finished in third place, they failed to be among the best third-place finishers and exited the tournament. The Asian representative was unable to effectively utilize all their opportunities.
Hong Myung-bo expressed hope that Korean football would regain the trust of the fans. He said he believes in the future of the national team and will support the new coach and the players.
The World Cup ended unsuccessfully for South Korea. Now, the country's football federation must find a coach who can lead the national team to a new stage.
