Former Moscow "Spartak" midfielder Alexander Mostovoy emphasized that at least 18 teams should participate in the Russian Premier League (RPL). This was reported by Euro-football.ru.
He expressed this opinion after hearing the news about the exclusion of the capital's "Torpedo" team from the league. Mostovoy asked on his Telegram channel that if someone else were to stop their activities tomorrow, only 14 teams would remain in the league.
In his view, Russia is a large country, and it is necessary to have at least 18 teams in the RPL. The "Torpedo" team has been removed from the list of RPL participants and fined five million rubles.
Last season, they were accused of attempting to bribe referees in at least three matches within the first league. It is currently unknown who will take "Torpedo's" place.
The meeting of the executive committee of the Russian Football Federation on this issue will be held on July 11. This decision is considered important for the upcoming 2025/2026 season.
