Google technology detects fake image of senator
Artificial intelligence technologies have taken a new and significant step in the fight against synthetic data, as reported by Zamin.uz.

The SynthID digital watermarking system developed by Google successfully detected a controversial fake image involving prominent U.S. politician Senator Mitch McConnell. The incident clearly demonstrated how effective the technology of marking AI-generated products with special labels can be in practice.

At the beginning of this week, an image spread widely on social media showing Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky lying in a hospital intensive care unit in critical condition. The photo depicted the politician's body connected to various medical devices and tubes, sharply intensifying public concern about his health.

However, fact-checking specialists thoroughly examined the image and confirmed it was entirely synthetic. In exposing this false information, Google's SynthID system fulfilled its primary function.

This technology embeds a special digital signature into the image's pixel layer that is invisible to the human eye. When specialists scanned the image, they were able to detect the invisible watermark indicating it was an AI-generated product.

This made it possible to clearly and definitively prove that the image was not real and had been created using computer programs. Senator McConnell's health has recently been a focal point of public attention.

His prolonged absence from public view has fueled various speculations, and the spread of such a high-quality fake image could have misled many people. However, modern protective tools demonstrated their high effectiveness in preventing such disinformation.

When introducing its SynthID technology, Google highlighted its main advantage: resilience. The system's uniqueness lies in the fact that it embeds a digital watermark so deeply into the image that even if the picture is copied, screenshotted, or uploaded to other platforms, it does not lose its properties.

Moreover, this security system is currently supported by some of the world's largest technology companies and is being applied to various AI models. It should be noted that such digital watermarks can currently detect only images generated within specific systems.

The joint effort of global tech giants against disinformation will play an important role in ensuring information security in the internet environment in the future. Users are advised to check any suspicious images using special verification tools.
