"Meta" prohibits covert image capture in smart glasses

Meta has improved the security system of its modern smart glasses and announced new software. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
The main purpose of this update is to prevent the device from being used to secretly record or photograph people around without their consent. Now, if the special light indicator installed inside the device is damaged or deliberately turned off, the camera system automatically locks and stops functioning.
The light-emitting diode located on the front of the smart glasses lights up when the recording process begins. This serves to alert people nearby that the camera is active.
However, according to recent reports, some users have attempted to disable this light mechanically—for example, by covering or painting it—to conduct covert surveillance. The newly implemented system detects such illegal actions and completely blocks the ability to record.
Company specialists have previously resisted such dishonest behavior. In second-generation glasses, if the light indicator was covered with something, the system would immediately detect it and demand that the obstruction be removed.
But technology enthusiasts continued to find various ways to bypass these protections. As emphasized by Alex Himel, Meta’s head of wearable devices, as smart glasses become more widespread, cases of their misuse for malicious purposes have also increased.
Therefore, security measures have been strengthened. Concerns about the privacy and inviolability of personal data have emerged amid growing criticism of Meta.
According to reports spreading in mass media, the company also plans to add facial recognition to these glasses in the future. At the same time, complaints about using these devices to track other people on the internet have increased.
Due to security concerns, many countries have imposed official restrictions on the use of smart glasses. For example, the New York administration has prohibited entering courthouses with camera-equipped glasses.
Similar strict measures have been in effect in Philadelphia courts as well. Not only government officials, but representatives of the private sector are also exercising caution in this matter.
Some major travel companies have banned the use of such devices in common areas on their ships. Meta’s update is regarded as an important step toward maintaining a balance between technological progress and human rights.
While creating convenience for users, the company aims to ensure that strangers do not intrude into personal lives. Such measures help foster a culture of safe technology use in societies that pay special attention to personal privacy.
