Microsoft announced that it will discontinue the Skype service starting May 5, 2025. The company is inviting users to switch to Microsoft Teams, which is a platform more focused on business and team collaboration.
Users who want to switch to Microsoft Teams can log in with their Skype account information, allowing all contacts and conversations to be automatically transferred.
The free version of Teams has the following limitations:
Group calls with a maximum of 100 users
Call duration up to 60 minutes
5 GB of cloud storage
Longer calls or additional features require a paid subscription.
Why is Microsoft shutting down Skype?
Skype was launched in 2003 and was acquired by Microsoft for $8.5 billion in 2011. However, in recent years, the rise of services like Zoom, WhatsApp, and Discord has left Skype behind. Microsoft decided to focus on the Teams service, as it is integrated with Office applications and offers more capabilities.
Users can export their Skype data until May 5.
