Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced the country's official recognition of the state of Palestine in September. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
Thus, Canada becomes the third country in the G7 group to make such a statement, following France and the United Kingdom. Carney stated that the decision to recognize is contingent upon elections being held by the Palestinian Authority and the exclusion of the HAMAS organization from the process.
He also emphasized the necessity for reforms in the Palestinian governance system. The Israeli government has stated that this decision is being perceived as rewarding HAMAS.
Canadian conservatives also said that such recognition would send the wrong signal following the October 7 attacks. Mark Carney highlighted that a significant shift is occurring in Canada's foreign policy due to the severe situation in Gaza and the ongoing expansion of Jewish settlements in the West Bank.
He stated that the humanitarian suffering in Gaza has reached an unbearable level. Following statements from France and the United Kingdom, Canada is also moving closer to the decision to recognize the state of Palestine.
More than 200 former diplomats in Canada sent an open letter to the Prime Minister, urging support for this decision. Out of 193 member states of the UN, 147 have already recognized the state of Palestine.
If Western countries formalize this decision, the United States will remain the only permanent member of the Security Council that has not recognized Palestine.
