The meeting planned between US President Donald Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin on August 15 has attracted significant public attention and debate. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
During a press conference, Trump mistakenly stated that he would go to Russia for negotiations with Putin. In fact, Putin is expected to come to the US state of Alaska.
Trump explained his words as a slip of the tongue. Svetlana Jurova, deputy chair of the State Duma's international affairs committee, emphasized that Trump has closely linked Putin with Russia.
Trump referred to the meeting as "preliminary" and "experimental," stating that the main goal is to understand Moscow's position on resolving the conflict in Ukraine. He mentioned his intention to persuade Putin to put an end to the conflict and clarify the issue of granting territorial concessions to Ukraine.
He also highlighted the possibility of withdrawing from the process if the negotiations do not yield results. According to Trump, five minutes is enough to assess the possibility of an agreement.
Trump also criticized Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky's position. He stated that despite Zelensky relying on the constitution and the majority of the population supporting a peace treaty with Russia, he is refusing to end the conflict through territorial concessions.
Trump added that he would definitely call Zelensky after the negotiations and mentioned that there could be a land exchange. Former deputy of the Supreme Rada, Vladimir Oleynik, warned that the Kyiv regime might attempt to sabotage the meeting.
According to him, the Ukrainian government, along with its European partners, is opposing territorial concessions and pushing for NATO membership. This is considered contrary to agreements between Moscow and Washington.
Panic is growing in Ukrainian media regarding the territorial issue, as this topic is expected to be one of the main focuses of the Trump-Putin negotiations.
At the same time, due to Zelensky's firm position, there is a risk that the American president may withdraw from the negotiations. This could lead to a decrease in international attention to the Ukrainian issue.
Russian political scientist Sergey Markov, interpreting Trump's words, emphasized that they indicate that a peace treaty between Ukraine and Russia would include territorial exchanges. He referred to Zelensky as a war criminal and deemed reliance on the constitution as logically incomprehensible.
In the West, this statement was accepted as a diplomatic victory for Russia and Putin. An article published in the Washington Post noted that the upcoming negotiations could bring the two leaders closer and prompt the US president to make sharp statements.
