US President Donald Trump recently stated in conversations with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and several European leaders that the issue of dividing Ukrainian territories will not be discussed at the planned meeting with Vladimir Putin in Alaska. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
According to sources from CNN and NBC News, Trump's main goal is to stop the fighting. NBC News reported that Trump acknowledged the necessity of halting military actions in Ukraine before entering peace negotiations.
During talks with European leaders, he considered this issue particularly important. At the same time, some European leaders expressed that they do not have high hopes for the outcomes of the meeting with Putin following this dialogue.
According to a CNN source, the expected results from the meeting are not very high. On August 6, Putin met with Trump's special envoy Steve Whitkoff at the Kremlin.
The Russian leader outlined his conditions for a peace agreement: Kyiv must stop the fighting and maintain the current front line in exchange for relinquishing the Donbass region. However, according to a source from The Washington Post, Putin does not intend to give up the parts of Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions under Russian control.
Zelensky and European leaders agreed with Trump that territorial issues will only be discussed with Ukraine's participation during the meeting. According to French President Emmanuel Macron, this is an important guarantee for Kyiv.
The meeting between Trump and Putin in Alaska holds great significance for global politics. However, sources emphasize that it is still too early to expect major achievements from the negotiations.
Nevertheless, stopping the fighting remains the first and most important step on the path to negotiations.
