According to the United States Geological Survey, the earthquake had a magnitude of 7.5, with its epicenter located at the Drake Passage near the Antarctic Peninsula. Experts stated that the tremor occurred at a depth of approximately 10.8 kilometers.
The earthquake was strongly felt in several cities in Chile as well as in neighboring areas of Argentina. Local residents and observers reported that the earthquake lasted several minutes and people rushed urgently to the streets.
Following the earthquake, the Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service of the Chilean Navy officially announced a tsunami risk. The organization’s officials advised the public to take precautionary measures and issued an order for the urgent evacuation of several areas.
The areas requiring mandatory evacuation include coastal zones, rocky shores, marshy areas, estuaries, lower parts of rivers flowing into the sea, pedestrian paths, marinas, coastal roads, fishing ports, and various sizes of piers. Residents and authorities must take these warnings seriously.
