The UN's global hunger monitoring system IPC has announced that official famine has begun in Gaza City and its surroundings. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
Currently, 514 thousand people, approximately a quarter of the population, are suffering from hunger. By the end of September, this figure is expected to reach 641 thousand.
Tom Fletcher, head of the UN humanitarian affairs, emphasized that this tragedy can be prevented. However, due to systematic obstacles created by Israel, food aid is being stopped at the borders.
Israel, on the other hand, rejected this report as false and biased. UN Secretary-General António Guterres called the famine in Gaza a catastrophe for humanity and urged an immediate ceasefire and unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid.
For information, this is the first famine recorded by the IPC outside of Africa. There is a warning that the situation may spread to the Deir al-Balah and Khan Yunis areas as well.
The famine occurring in the Gaza area poses a serious threat to the lives of the population. Therefore, rapid and effective action by the international community is considered necessary.
