A 58-year-old mountaineer, Sergey Melnikov, who had been missing for a week in the Sochi mountains, was found safe. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
The South Search and Rescue Service of the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations announced this. Melnikov crossed to the other side of the mountain range and reached the village of Aib.
Border guards found him there and took him to a safe area. According to Alexander Pyatnitsyn, Vice President of the Russian Mountaineering Federation, the mountaineer is in good health and does not require medical assistance.
Search operations were conducted for a week. The village of Aib is located on the border between Russia and Abkhazia, at an altitude of 840 meters above sea level.
Sergey Melnikov works in the photo service of the Rosa Khutor ski resort. On August 29, he went up the mountain as a guide with two tourists.
However, after one day, the tourists returned and reported that Melnikov could not descend due to fatigue. Thus, after a week of anxious waiting, the mountaineer's safe discovery was a great relief for his relatives and rescuers.
This incident once again reminded of the importance of caution and preparation in the mountains. The prompt and effective actions of the search and rescue service played a crucial role in saving a life.
