The Latvian government has introduced new measures to ensure the country's security. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
Starting from 18:00 local time on September 11, the airspace along the eastern border facing Russia and Belarus has been temporarily closed. This restriction will be in effect at least until September 18.
According to local media reports, this decision was made on the initiative of Latvian Defense Minister Andris Spruds. The minister emphasized that there is currently no direct threat from Russia, but the illegal entry of drones into Polish airspace has prompted these preventive measures.
Additionally, the Latvian parliament – the Saeima – is discussing the complete closure of border areas with these countries in connection with the large joint military exercises called "Zapad–2025" being held in Russia and Belarus. Experts believe that this measure taken by Latvia is closely linked to NATO's security policy in Eastern Europe.
Especially at a time when tensions in the region and conflicts related to drones are increasing, the closure of the airspace is considered a precautionary measure. Latvian officials emphasize that these measures are temporary and that the airspace will be reopened once the country's security is guaranteed.
