According to the Tagesschau publication, Turkey's Udofed association has officially withdrawn its application to recognize doner kebab as a national dish across the European Union and to establish common standards for it. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
Thus, the long-standing debate between Turkey and Germany has come to an end. According to the information, if the European Union had approved this application, all dining establishments would have been required to strictly adhere to specific norms and rules when preparing doner.
For example, doner types containing minced meat or served with sauce would have deviated from the standard and needed to be called by a different name. Experts emphasize that the doner kebab industry is highly developed in Germany, and the country holds a leading position in doner sales within the European Union.
Such restrictions could have caused significant economic damage to German entrepreneurs. As a result of Turkey withdrawing the application, the preparation and sale of doner will continue according to each country's own laws and regulations.
Some consider this decision a victory for Germany, while others note that debates regarding the true origin and national status of the dish may continue.
