Among Uzbeks serving prison sentences in Russia, drug-related crimes rank among the most common offenses. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan, approximately 60 percent of our compatriots serving sentences in Russian prisons have been found guilty of crimes related to the illegal sale and transportation of narcotic substances. Additionally, 12 percent have been convicted of sexual violence, 7 percent of murder, 5 percent of causing serious harm to health, 4 percent of theft, and 3 percent of fraud.
Munira Nizomova, head of the Consular-Legal Department, emphasized that these cases are mainly linked to difficult working and living conditions, lack of legal literacy, and the desire to violate legal requirements. Furthermore, it is common for Uzbek passengers to be held for extended periods during inspections at Russian airports.
Sometimes citizens remain under control for 6 to 12 hours, which is explained by deficiencies in documents and incomplete compliance with laws and regulations. Experts believe that increasing the legal knowledge of our compatriots working abroad and developing a system to provide them with quality advice and assistance can prevent such negative situations.
Thus, the situation of Uzbeks in prison in Russia is viewed not only as a legal issue but also as a social problem. This necessitates a more serious approach and effective measures to address this matter in the future.
