US President Donald Trump announced that he will meet with Chinese leader Xi Jinping in South Korea in the coming weeks. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
During a conversation at the White House with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Trump emphasized that relations with Xi are good and stated that the meeting will take place soon. He also noted the importance of maintaining US competitiveness.
The meeting is expected to discuss trade and economic agreements, industrial supply chains, and restrictions in the fields of aviation and technology. In the spring, China declared its resistance to US pressure, and Xi Jinping said that the European Union should reconsider Washington's tariff policies.
Following that, Trump spoke about halting the sale of Boeing airplanes to China. Washington is discussing tariff policies with nearly 70 countries and trying to increase pressure on Beijing.
Beijing, however, emphasized the necessity of dialogue and negotiations instead of threats and partially lifted the 125% tariff on certain goods. The US also ended some privileges on cheap products imported from China.
After negotiations at the end of July, the American side agreed to ease some restrictions, but the main issue — mutual tariffs and a comprehensive agreement draft — remains unresolved. Therefore, the meeting in South Korea provides an opportunity to start a new phase, set a roadmap for an agreement, or reduce the list of contentious issues.
In conclusion, although both sides are showing readiness for compromise, strategic competition continues. Thus, it is advisable to expect not a major agreement from the Seoul meeting, but a step-by-step approach and temporary relief.
The main question is whether a new opportunity will be created to keep the competition under control or not.
