The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, has urged the Kyrgyz government to abandon plans to reinstate the death penalty. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
He emphasized that the death penalty does not reduce crime rates; on the contrary, it contradicts the principles of human rights. The Commissioner called on Kyrgyzstan to remain committed to its international obligations and to take more active steps to ensure the inviolability of human life.
Furthermore, the death penalty is considered an inappropriate measure not only from a legal perspective but also from moral and social viewpoints. He also noted that this measure would negatively affect the country's reputation on the international stage.
The death penalty was officially abolished in Kyrgyzstan in 2007, and currently, the issue of its reintroduction is being discussed in parliament. This appeal by the UN is an important call aimed at protecting human rights and strengthening the rule of law.
