US President Donald Trump announced that he has canceled the planned meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Budapest. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
This was stated in the president's speech published on the official White House YouTube channel. Trump emphasized that he carefully assessed the situation before making the decision and that holding the meeting under the current circumstances is not appropriate.
In his opinion, the United States needs to take a firmer stance towards Russia. Trump said he decided to cancel the meeting because he sensed it would not yield results, but he expressed his intention to hold the meeting in the future.
Additionally, he did not hide his support for increasing pressure on Moscow and stressed that it is time to impose new sanctions against Russia. Both President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky have expressed their desire for the conflict to be resolved peacefully.
Trump believes it would have been better if this conflict had not occurred since the beginning of the war. He wants both sides to stop shooting, maintain the current line, and return to their homes.
Washington's main goal is to ensure unconditional peace and reduce tensions. Regarding armaments, it was stated that only the US possesses the technology to control "Tomahawk" cruise missiles and that there is no intention to provide them to other countries.
Earlier, the American press reported that delivery of "Tomahawk" missiles to Ukraine was delayed due to technical reasons. Although Trump said he would make a final decision about the Budapest summit within the next two days, the meeting was canceled.
At the same time, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó stated that the meeting between the presidents of Russia and the US will definitely take place; only the date is a matter of discussion. According to CNN sources, after a conversation between Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and US Secretary of State Mark Rubio, Washington realized that Moscow's position had hardly changed.
For this reason, it is considered unlikely that the summit will be held in the coming weeks. The RIA Novosti agency, citing White House sources, reported that Trump discussed the meeting with his advisers but concluded that now is not the time to continue negotiations.
Recall that on October 16, Trump and Putin spoke by phone for two hours. President Trump said the conversation was productive and expressed his intention to hold a meeting in Budapest.
At the same time, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent emphasized that the president is not yet satisfied with the negotiation process. Trump, while expressing hope for the conflict's resolution, noted that this process should be without pressure, without words, and without the use of force.
