German Chancellor Friedrich Mers made an official visit to Turkey on October 30 and met with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
During the meeting, important topics such as migration, defense, and the Gaza issue were discussed. According to the Die Welt publication, especially on the Gaza issue, serious differences of opinion were observed between the parties.
According to Reuters agency, President Erdoğan accused Israel of committing genocide in Gaza and criticized Germany for not paying enough attention to this situation. Turkey's DHA agency published the transcript of the meeting, which reflected Erdoğan's sharp condemnation of Israel's actions.
In his speech, Erdoğan emphasized that Turkey has placed the humanitarian tragedies in Gaza on the international agenda from the very beginning and is actively working on this matter. He noted the necessity of supporting a "two-state solution" to ensure long-term peace in the region.
He also stated that every country should contribute to this process. Friedrich Mers, on the other hand, expressed his support for Israel and emphasized that Germany has been protecting Israel since 1948.
While noting the necessity of achieving peace, he said that decisions cannot be made in this process without HAMAS. At the same time, he expressed deep sorrow over the situation of children in Gaza but stressed Israel's right to self-defense.
Erdoğan expressed dissatisfaction with Mers's position and lamented Germany's indifferent attitude towards the humanitarian tragedies in Gaza. According to him, thousands of women, children, and elderly people have died in Gaza, but the international community has turned a blind eye to this situation.
He also emphasized that delivering humanitarian aid to Gaza is becoming increasingly difficult and that Turkey is making great efforts in this regard. At the end of the meeting, Erdoğan stated that Turkey is ready to actively participate in restoring peace in the region.
He proposed cooperation with Germany on this issue and noted the necessity for both countries to work together to stop the tragedies in the region. At the same time, the two state leaders emphasized the importance of continuing strategic cooperation and maintaining dialogue.
