
The former presidential advisor Yerjan Babakumarov has died in the capital of Kazakhstan, Astana. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
According to the Orda publication, he sustained severe injuries during a fight with an acquaintance and died at the scene. The incident occurred at night.
Official information states that the 56-year-old Babakumarov got into an argument with a 36-year-old man, which escalated into a physical altercation. According to the police statement, "the victim sustained life-threatening injuries during the fight."
A criminal case has been opened on charges of murder, the suspect has been detained and placed in a temporary detention facility. The investigation is ongoing, and the exact reasons and circumstances of the fight are being examined.
Yerjan Babakumarov was born on March 2, 1969, in the Taldykorgan region of Kazakhstan. He graduated from Al-Farabi Kazakh National University in 1991 and began his career in public service that same year.
From 1996, he held various high-ranking positions, including responsible roles in the Almaty city administration, the presidential administration, and the prime minister's office. During Qasym-Jomart Toqayev's presidency in 2019, Babakumarov served for a time as an advisor.
Later, from 2020 until February 2022, he worked as the deputy mayor of Almaty. After the unrest in January 2022, he resigned from his position and has not appeared on the political scene since.
Former colleagues and like-minded individuals remember Yerjan Babakumarov as an experienced official who dedicated many years to public service. His life was devoted to state governance and reforms.
