A large part of the Didal glacier located in the Tajikobod district of Tajikistan broke off from the mountain and slid down approximately 5 kilometers. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
The country's Hydrometeorology Agency reported this. According to experts, the detached ice mass was 1.5 kilometers long, 200 meters wide, and up to 50 meters high.
This incident is mainly associated with the recent rise in air temperature over the past weeks. Scientists have stated that the glacier remains unstable.
This increases the likelihood of landslides and floods in nearby areas. Mountains make up 93 percent of Tajikistan's territory.
Nearly 14,000 glaciers located in the country are of great importance for Central Asia's water resources. Therefore, changes in large glaciers like Didal can seriously affect the ecological stability of the entire region.
Monitoring this process and timely assessing risks and threats is of great importance.
