Mariam Sisse, a well-known TikTok blogger in Mali, tragically died. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
She had over 90,000 followers on the TikTok platform and mainly created videos showcasing the life, customs, and daily routines of the people in the city of Tonka. Additionally, she produced content rich in social themes and humor, gaining great popularity among young people.
This incident was reported by the South China Morning Post. On November 7, Mariam was detained by an unknown group of jihadists.
They accused the blogger of collaborating with the Malian army, meaning she was allegedly providing information to the military. According to the words of the deceased’s brother, “My sister was taken by jihadists on Thursday.
They accused her of working for the army and openly executed her the next day.” On Saturday, Mariam Sisse was brought by motorcycle to the center of Tonka city and was shot dead in front of many people at the city’s Independence Square.
The security service described this incident as “the highest level of barbarity and lawlessness.” Local officials strongly condemned this crime and classified it as a “murder directed against society.”
In recent years, jihadist groups have intensified their activities in Mali. In particular, the JNIM organization linked to “Al-Qaeda” has disrupted the road and fuel supply systems in some northern regions of the country.
This has led to the closure of schools and the halt of agricultural activities. It is known that armed clashes with insurgents have been ongoing in Mali since 2012.
In 2021, a military junta seized power and set restoring security and combating extremism as its main tasks in the country. The death of Mariam Sisse has brought the issue of social media activists’ safety not only in Mali but across Africa back onto the agenda.
