Scientists in Australia have identified a new species of bee distinguished by its unique shape. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
The discovery was announced in one of the scientific journals, *Journal of Hymenoptera Research*. The new species was named “Megachile Lucifer”.
The word “Lucifer” means “light-bringer” in Latin. Researchers found these bees in the Bremer Range area of Goldfields, Australia.
They encountered this new species while observing rare wildflowers. According to the data, these bees live in a region approximately 470 kilometers east of Perth and are very rare.
Interestingly, the female bees of this species have large and noticeable horns. Scientists speculate that these horns may help in pollen collection or defense.
According to Curtin University professor Kit Prendergast, the species was named after watching the Netflix series “Lucifer,” as the bees’ appearance resembled the series’ main character. Researchers believe this discovery once again highlights the importance of protecting local bees and preserving their natural habitats.
Researchers emphasize that the new bee species lives in an ecosystem with rare flowers. Therefore, climate change or human activities, especially mining, could pose a serious threat to this species’ survival.
Professor Prendergast noted that such species play a crucial role in the survival of endangered plants and the stability of entire ecosystems. According to him, humanity is still at risk of losing many species that have yet to be studied.
This further increases the need for nature conservation.
