He answered in court. He was wounded during the arrest and participated in the court hearing online from the hospital.
At the court session held in Washington, his lawyer defended his client, denying the charges of assault and first-degree murder. He emphasized that Rahmonullo L. had no prior convictions and requested his release from custody.
The incident occurred on November 26 near Farragut Square close to the White House. Rahmonullo L.
fired shots at the soldiers on duty. As a result, 20-year-old soldier Sara Beckstrom was seriously injured and died in the hospital.
Another soldier, 24-year-old Andrew Wolfe, remains in critical condition, and doctors are fighting for his life. It has been reported that Rahmonullo L.
moved to the US from Afghanistan in 2021. He had cooperated with American special services in his homeland and therefore obtained the right to relocate to the US after the Taliban came to power.
He applied for asylum in the US in 2024 and received it at the beginning of 2025. Following the incident, US President Donald Trump strongly condemned the attack.
He ordered a re-examination of all citizens who came from Afghanistan during Joe Biden's administration. Additionally, he emphasized that all measures would be taken to deport foreign nationals found to be illegal or dangerous.
Due to the shooting, the US Citizenship and Immigration Services temporarily suspended all asylum applications. USCIS head Joseph Edlow announced that these restrictions will continue until the possibility of more thorough checks of foreign individuals is ensured.
Moreover, the US State Department temporarily halted visa issuance to Afghan citizens.
