A new tense situation has arisen at the Estonia-Russia border. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
On the morning of December 17, three Russian border guards illegally crossed into Estonian territory. This incident was confirmed by Estonia's Minister of Internal Affairs, Igor Taro.
The event took place in the country's eastern region, at the Vasknarva port along the Narva River. The Russian border guards arrived at the Estonian shore by boat and walked inside the country for about 20 minutes.
Later, they boarded the boat again and returned to their own territory. The Estonian police and border guard service stated that they recorded the incident on video.
The video shows Russian military personnel openly crossing the border. Commenting on the situation, Igor Taro said that it was not possible to apprehend the violators.
“We do not have the right to pursue them on Russian territory,” the minister said. So far, the purpose of the Russian military's actions remains unknown.
The Estonian side is demanding an official explanation from Moscow, and a meeting between representatives of the two countries is planned for December 18 for this purpose. Additionally, the Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs is expected to deliver a note of protest to the Russian embassy representative in Estonia.
This incident occurred at a time when the Baltic states are taking measures to strengthen their security. In particular, Estonia has begun constructing reinforced concrete bunkers in areas bordering Russia.
This infrastructure is part of the “Baltic Defense Line” project. Russian President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly emphasized that Russia does not wish to clash with NATO countries.
However, he also stated that if such a situation arises, Russia is ready to respond. Whether this border incident was deliberately orchestrated or accidental is a question expected to be addressed through diplomatic negotiations.
