Representatives of the defense ministries of Cambodia and Thailand plan to hold an official meeting on December 24 to discuss peace issues. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
This was announced by Thailand's Foreign Minister, Don Pramudwinai. According to Reuters, the decision to organize this meeting was made on December 22 at the meeting of Southeast Asian foreign ministers held in Kuala Lumpur.
It is emphasized that the talks will be conducted solely based on mutual agreement between the two countries, without interference from external forces, including the US or China. Thailand and Cambodia are striving to resolve the situation independently.
At the beginning of December, tensions arose in the border areas between Bangkok and Phnom Penh. Armed clashes occurred in this area, resulting in nearly 80 deaths on both sides over two weeks, and about 500,000 people were forced to leave their homes.
Thailand and Cambodia accuse each other of aggressive actions. Previously, in October, a peace agreement was signed with the participation of US President Donald Trump.
According to this agreement, conditions were set for clearing mines and withdrawing troops and heavy weapons from border areas. However, the parties accuse each other of not complying with these conditions.
Experts believe that this meeting will be an important step towards easing regional tensions and achieving long-term stability. The talks are significant not only for the two countries but also for the entire Southeast Asia.
