For the first time, a Muslim has been elected mayor of New York City and took the oath on the Quran. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
The new mayor, Zohran Mamdani, officially began his duties on January 1, 2026. This was reported by the Associated Press.
While previous mayors mostly took the oath on the Bible, Mamdani chose to swear in as a Muslim using the Quran. According to U.S. law, it is not mandatory to use a religious book during the oath ceremony.
During his election campaign, Mamdani focused on social issues, including reducing living costs, resolving rental problems, and abolishing public transportation fares. He actively mobilized Muslim and South Asian voters in his campaign.
After his victory, former President Barack Obama congratulated Mamdani via phone call. Zohran Mamdani describes himself as a “democratic socialist” and is promoting a number of initiatives to ensure social equality.
However, he cannot become the President of the United States because he was born in Uganda. Thus, for the first time in New York’s history, a Muslim individual is leading the city administration.
Significant changes are expected in the city, which has a population of 8.5 million and a budget of 120 billion dollars. Additionally, the number of voters participating in the election exceeded 2 million for the first time since 1969.
