Russian army losses have exceeded 163 thousand

Since the large-scale armed conflict between Russia and Ukraine began, new information about the losses of the Russian army has been announced. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
According to the investigation results conducted by the BBC Russian Service and the Mediazona publication in cooperation with volunteers, as of January 13, 2026, the deaths of at least 163,606 Russian soldiers have been confirmed through open sources. According to the data, among the deceased are 6,302 high-ranking officers.
Additionally, since the autumn of 2024, the highest losses in the war have been observed among volunteer soldiers (53,976). Deaths remain high among prisoners hired from prisons and conscripted soldiers.
In terms of age category, losses are highest among men aged 33–38. The majority of soldiers in this age group went to war voluntarily.
According to the data from the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Russia's total losses, including killed and wounded military personnel, have exceeded 1.1 million. As of January 17, 2026, Russia's invasion of Ukraine has reached its 1,424th day, setting a record for the duration of the war.
Furthermore, Russian forces continue to deliver major strikes on Ukraine's energy system. The Ukrainian Security Service has described these attacks as "crimes against humanity."
Since the beginning of the heating season, 256 air strikes have been carried out on Ukraine's energy facilities. Russian forces have targeted 11 hydroelectric power plants and 45 large thermal power plants.
The New York Times newspaper called the current winter in Kyiv the "heaviest season" since the war began. Experts believe that only individuals with confirmed names and officially confirmed deaths have been included in the list.
The actual number of losses is likely much higher. It remains unknown how the energy crisis in Ukraine might affect the final outcome of the war.
