European countries have begun strengthening security in the Arctic

Eight European countries, including the United Kingdom, Germany, Denmark, Finland, France, the Netherlands, Norway, and Sweden, issued a joint statement aimed at strengthening security in the Arctic region. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
In this statement, they emphasized their solidarity with the Kingdom of Denmark and the people of Greenland, expressing their readiness for dialogue based on the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity. Through this statement, the European countries highlighted two important points.
First, they have a unified and coordinated position on Arctic matters. Second, they warned that turning issues related to Greenland into trade pressures could harm transatlantic relations.
The statement noted that customs threats could negatively impact transatlantic ties and potentially lead to dangerous conflicts. The military exercise "Arctic Endurance," organized by Denmark, was also mentioned.
This exercise was conducted out of necessity within NATO and does not involve any threats. Through this, European countries are trying to prevent military actions from being misinterpreted.
Against this backdrop, it was reported that former US President Donald Trump mentioned the possibility of imposing a 10% tariff on the eight countries and expressed readiness for negotiations regarding Greenland. However, European diplomats emphasize that linking security issues with trade sanctions could undermine alliance principles.
Additionally, according to some sources, European countries sent small military units to Greenland, but German soldiers soon left the island. Specifically, information circulated that 15 German military personnel returned to Copenhagen.
These events indicate that the Arctic is no longer just a cold geographic area but has become an important arena where trade, security, and geopolitics converge. Today's statement signifies that European countries are striving to defend their positions based on the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity.
If the parties do not adhere to these principles, future "tariff wars" could lead to a deeper crisis within the alliance.
