Potato crisis in Russia: why have prices sharply increased?
One of the most consumed products by the population in the Russian market is potato, the price of which has sharply increased since the beginning of the year. This situation is primarily related to the decrease in potato cultivation volume, a drop in yield, and a reduction in reserves in the country.

According to information disseminated by the publication "Kommersant," the potato shortage that began in the spring of 2024 has led to a record level of product prices today. At the end of April this year, the retail price of potatoes was an average of 85.4 rubles per kilogram (approximately 13,500 soums). This figure is nearly three times higher compared to the same period last year.

The increase in wholesale prices is directly affecting retail prices. Since the beginning of the year, the price of potatoes in the wholesale market has risen by 85.2 percent, reaching 46.3 rubles per kilogram (7,300 soums). Even at the beginning of May, this figure rose further to an average of 51.1 rubles per kilogram (8,100 soums). This means it is 4.4 times more than the same period last year.

The "Rusprodsoyuz" organization in Russia is also confirming this information. According to them, as of May 2, the wholesale price of potatoes was 47.6 rubles per kilogram (7,500 soums), which has increased by 25 percent in the last month.

Experts in the retail trade sector are even being forced to operate at a loss to stabilize potato prices in this situation. Stanislav Bogdanov, chairman of the presidium of the Retail Trade Companies Association, noted that many stores are trying to sell cheaper types of potatoes at prices lower than their purchase price, resulting in an approximate loss of 2 rubles for each kilogram of product.

There are several important reasons for the increase in potato prices. Dmitriy Vostrikov, executive director of "Rusprodsoyuz," points to the lack of storage facilities, rising energy supply costs, and a sharp reduction in reserves as causes for the increase in market prices.

The Russian Ministry of Agriculture is also taking measures to address this issue and plans to increase the area planted with potatoes by 2.3 percent in 2025. However, due to the cold arrival of spring this year, potato planting has started late, which may delay the harvest process until June or July.

Market specialists and experts indicate that this uncertain situation regarding prices may continue until the end of June or the beginning of July. It is hoped that by that time, the new harvest will begin to be collected, resulting in a decrease in prices.

Meanwhile, among the population, concerns and dissatisfaction regarding potato prices are growing. Many families are facing financial difficulties in this situation and are struggling to purchase this essential consumer product.

Thus, the potato crisis is becoming not only an economic but also a social problem in Russia. Finding a prompt solution to this issue by the government and relevant organizations has become an extremely important task for the well-being of the population.
