Boycott of the 2026 World Cup in Germany under discussion

Unexpected political debates have started in Germany regarding the 2026 World Cup. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
These discussions were triggered by the US's position and statements concerning Greenland. In this regard, the issue of boycotting the tournament is being openly discussed.
This initiative was proposed by Oke Göttlich, president of the “St. Pauli” football club and a member of the Bundesliga and German Football Federation executive committee. He emphasized that it is necessary to seriously consider how appropriate it is for European football players to participate in a country that may indirectly or directly pose a threat to Europe in the future.
According to Göttlich, this question has become very relevant today. The debates arose due to US President Donald Trump's statements about the desire to deploy missile defense systems in Greenland, which belongs to Denmark.
These views have sparked intense discussions in Germany about what position should be taken at the intersection of sports and geopolitics. It is worth noting that the 2026 World Cup is planned to be held in the territories of the US, Canada, and Mexico.
The tournament is expected to start on June 11 and conclude with the final match on July 19. So far, these issues are only being discussed at the level of opinions; no official decision has been made.
However, these calls alone indicate that off-field issues are also playing an important role in the preparation process for the 2026 World Cup.
