A large-scale "purge" process has begun in the Chinese army

Significant changes have been occurring in recent years under the high command of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) in China. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
Under the slogans of "modernization" and "combating disciplinary violations," influential generals close to the Central Military Commission (CMC) are being removed from their positions or subjected to investigations. This process indicates not a simple personnel reshuffle but a systematic cleansing.
Since 2022, a large part of the military community formed around Xi Jinping has been dismissed or brought under scrutiny. Among them, the cases of former Defense Minister Li Shangfu, Miao Hua, who held a high position in military political affairs, and former CMC Vice Chairman He Weidong are under review.
In January 2026, Zhang Yuxia and Liu Zhengli were accused of serious disciplinary and legal violations and placed under investigation. These incidents reveal how serious the internal upheavals within the Chinese army are.
According to unofficial sources, this process may be related not only to corruption but also to problems in the strategic weapons sector and failures in major projects. Analysts assess these actions as steps aimed at strengthening Xi Jinping's influence within the party.
Even those considered close to him are not safe, which indicates an atmosphere of fear and absolute obedience within the system. This "major cleansing" in the Chinese army creates a dual picture: externally, control and discipline are being reinforced, while internally, there is a lack of trust among the elite.
Such changes naturally have a direct impact on China's military-political decisions and the geopolitical situation. Without stability and internal confidence, even the strongest army can weaken.
Therefore, it will be important to monitor how these processes in China affect regional security.
