Record number of brewery closures in the UK

During 2025, nearly 140 beer-producing enterprises in the UK ceased their operations. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
This figure is recognized as the highest annual result recorded since 1974. The Independent Brewers Association (SIBA) informed The Daily Telegraph about this.
According to the association's executive director, Andy Sly, despite high demand for craft beer in the country, the closure of breweries has reached a record level. He emphasized that the number of beer-producing enterprises is steadily decreasing across all regions of the country.
Experts believe the main reason for this process is related to the increase in tax burden. In particular, the rise in excise duty and value-added tax on alcoholic products is causing serious difficulties for industry entrepreneurs.
Andy Sly noted that the sharp increase in taxes is negatively affecting not only breweries but also the pubs that are their main customers. Additionally, this situation is enabling large global beer brands to gain dominance in the market.
This weakens the competitiveness of small and independent producers and further complicates their operations.
