Railway workers' strike in Spain disrupted services

Railway drivers in Spain announced a three-day strike. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
As a result of this situation, the plans of thousands of people were disrupted. According to local media reports, hundreds of services on the “Renfe” railway network were canceled on the very first day, with serious restrictions especially felt on high-speed routes.
According to information, nearly 350 high-speed trains were taken out of service, and the total number of canceled trips was even higher. The strike was organized by the Semaf trade union, which mainly demands improvements in railway safety.
The main claim of the trade union is related to safety issues. They are asking the government to take strict measures to strengthen railway infrastructure, review the safety control system, and increase accountability.
This protest was further intensified by two major recent railway accidents. In January, reports emerged of casualties and injuries resulting from a collision in the Córdoba province.
Additionally, in Catalonia, deaths and injuries were recorded following a train derailment. The problem is that despite long-standing negotiations with employers and the government, the parties have not been able to reach an agreement.
As a result, the trade union decided to express its demands through a strike. Railways play an important role in the daily lives of millions of people in Spain.
For example, the “Renfe” company announced that it transported over 537 million passengers in 2024. Nevertheless, any strike negatively affects not only public mood but also the country's economic situation.
The main question now is whether concrete measures will be taken to ensure railway safety or if this issue will be further delayed. The strike has brought serious problems to light, but in the long term, this pressure could serve as a stimulus for real reforms.
If safety measures are strengthened, the likelihood of preventing such tragedies in the future is high.
