The population of Turkey is aging faster than expected.

Demographic changes occurring in the Republic of Turkey have recently become a serious focus of attention. Zamin.uz reported on this matter.
According to new data provided by the Directorate of National Statistics, the aging process of the country's population is progressing faster than expected. Over the last five-year period, the number of citizens aged 75 and older has increased by more than 20 percent, a figure that demands serious attention for the social sector.
Currently, Turkey's total population stands at 86 million 90 thousand 71 persons. The number of elderly people, which was 7 million 953 thousand in 2020, reached 9 million 583 thousand by the end of this year.
This figure accounts for approximately 11 percent of the country's total population. Based on expert analyses, this share is expected to exceed 13 percent by 2030.
Currently, the responsibility of supporting an average of fifteen elderly people falls on every one hundred working-age individuals. This situation places additional burdens on the financial and social services systems.
According to statistical data, Sinop Province has the highest proportion of elderly people. In terms of absolute numbers, Istanbul is the city with the largest number of elderly citizens residing there.
In the country, a total of 12 thousand 328 citizens have surpassed the age of one hundred, with the majority being women. Additionally, approximately 1 million 70 thousand elderly citizens live alone at home.
This situation makes the issue of meeting their vital needs and providing psychological support even more urgent. By the end of last year, Turkey was officially included in the list of countries with a high proportion of elderly people according to the United Nations classification.
Effective programs must be developed by the state in the future to manage this process.
