Grandparents Who Care for Grandchildren in South Korea Receive a Monthly Payment

A new social program aimed at supporting families is being launched in South Korea. Zamin.uz reported on this.
Under this program, grandparents or close relatives will have the opportunity to receive monthly payments for caring for their grandchildren. According to reports, this initiative has been introduced as an alternative to kindergarten or nanny services.
In other words, if family members take on the responsibility of caring for a child, they will receive financial incentives from the state. Specifically, this program has been operating on Jeju Island since March.
A similar system has been in place in Seoul since 2023. According to the rules, if a grandparent or other relative cares for a child for at least 40 hours per month, they receive a payment of approximately $200.
Experts believe that such programs are aimed at reducing demographic problems in the country. This is because South Korea has one of the lowest birth rates in the world.
Thus, the government is striving to ease child-rearing and prevent population decline by encouraging families. This strengthens the family support system in society and ensures the well-being of the younger generation.
