Major Mountain Tourism Fraud Uncovered in Nepal

Law enforcement agencies in Nepal have uncovered one of the largest financial crimes in the country's tourism sector. A total of thirty-two individuals, including guides, helicopter service operators, and medical facility staff operating in the Himalayan region, are accused of illegally embezzling international insurance funds.
According to the Central Investigation Bureau of Nepal, the criminal group operated between 2022 and 2025 on Mount Everest and other popular mountain routes. It is estimated that nearly five thousand foreign tourists indirectly fell victim to this fraudulent scheme.
The perpetrators primarily targeted tourists with expensive insurance policies, particularly those covering helicopter evacuation services. Guides used various methods to create the illusion of deteriorating health among tourists.
In some cases, it is suspected that substances causing stomach upset and nausea were added to the tourists' food or drinks. This induced symptoms similar to altitude sickness, providing a pretext to initiate emergency evacuation procedures.
Under the fraudulent scheme, a single helicopter flight was documented as several separate incidents. Additionally, hospitals prepared fake medical reports, and tourists were hospitalized without justification.
For instance, in one identified case, a single company carried out more than a hundred fake evacuations, collecting over ten million dollars. The total amount of damage is reported to exceed twenty million dollars.
This incident has severely damaged the reputation of Nepal's tourism industry. International insurance companies are now considering tightening insurance terms for tourists visiting the country.
Experts view this situation not only as economic damage but also as a blow to the country's standing in the global community. Currently, more than ten suspects have been arrested, and investigations are ongoing.
