Begoña Gómez will answer in court for corruption and embezzlement

According to the EFE news agency, Begoña Gómez, the wife of the Spanish Prime Minister, will stand trial in a case involving corruption and embezzlement of public funds. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
Following the preliminary court hearings, the court applied strict precautionary measures against the accused. The court established a series of restrictions to prevent the risk of Gómez fleeing the country.
She has been prohibited from leaving Spanish territory. Her passport for international travel has been confiscated.
Additionally, she is required to register with the relevant supervisory authorities twice a month. The prosecution is seeking a severe penalty in this case.
It was previously reported that the state prosecutor requested a 24-year prison sentence for Gómez. The charges include corruption in the private sector, embezzlement of public funds, misappropriation and misuse of budget funds, and using her position to illegally influence decisions.
Gómez is not the only one in this case; her advisor Cristina Álvarez, who is accused of complicity, and prominent businessman Juan Carlos Barrabés will also face trial. The case began in the spring of 2024.
At that time, a public organization called "Clean Hands" filed a complaint accusing Gómez of using her political connections to award government contracts and state tenders to certain companies. The investigation subsequently expanded.
New episodes were added to the case related to Gómez's activities at a university department in Madrid, including financial processes and suspicious circumstances in the hiring of staff. The defense maintains that Gómez is innocent.
Her lawyers claim that there is no real legal basis for this case and that the process was organized for the purpose of exerting political pressure on the current Prime Minister.
