The US bans Polestar from selling in the country

Based on new rules adopted by the US government to ensure national security, a ban has been imposed on the sale of new Polestar brand vehicles within the country. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
This decision will take effect after the end of the 2027 model year. The US Department of Commerce denied the special permit requested by the company to continue its operations in the American market, putting the brand's future in this large region in question.
The main reason for the ban is related to Polestar's ownership structure. It is known that the controlling stake of the brand belongs to the Chinese automotive group Geely.
According to the requirements of the US connected vehicle rule, the sale of cars with software or electronic components manufactured in China and Russia will be restricted. Washington is concerned that these technologies could be used for espionage or cyberattacks.
Under the new regulations, restrictions on software responsible for communication and network connectivity functions will apply starting from 2027 models. Restrictions on hardware are scheduled to take effect from 2030.
Polestar attempted to be exempt from these rules, but official authorities assessed the brand's ties with China as an extremely high risk. Interestingly, Volvo, another brand within the Geely group, had previously succeeded in obtaining such a permit.
This situation serves as a serious warning for local brands such as Lincoln and Buick, which sell cars assembled in China in the US. They will also be required to undergo similar inspections in the near future.
What complicates the situation for Polestar is that the Polestar 3 model is produced specifically at a plant in the US state of South Carolina. For now, the fate of local production after the ban remains uncertain.
Polestar management decided not to contest the US government's decision. The company's CEO stated that the brand's strategy is already focused on other regions.
According to him, as of the first quarter of 2026, nearly 94 percent of Polestar's global sales were attributed to markets outside the US. This indicates that the company's exit from the American market will not deal a catastrophic blow to its overall financial condition.
The company has identified the following regions as its main future development directions. First are the European Union countries, where the launch of the new Polestar 7 model is planned.
Second, the Southeast Asian states are envisioned. Third, the markets of Eastern Europe and Latin America take place.
Fourth, the Canadian market has also been designated as a strategic direction. Good news for existing customers in the US is that cars already sold or imported into the country will be retained, and no ban will be imposed on their use.
While revising its market strategy, Polestar informed its customers and partners that it will continue to provide trust and quality service.
