AI cameras that detect rule-breakers will be installed on British roads

The UK government plans to widely deploy AI-equipped cameras to improve road safety and increase driver accountability, Zamin.uz reports.
This modern technology will not only measure compliance with speed limits but also automatically detect violations such as driving without a seatbelt, lack of insurance, or missing vehicle tax. The system is expected to fundamentally change how road order is monitored.
The new system will become a powerful tool monitoring every driver’s move. While many drivers may feel uneasy about such strict oversight, experts believe this measure will significantly improve order on the roads.
In particular, since the current system, which focuses solely on speed control, has failed to deliver the expected reduction in fatalities over the past fifteen years, attention must shift to other critical areas. Currently, most enforcement on British roads targets speeding, while other serious issues often go unnoticed.
For example, improper lane usage by trucks and minibuses causes traffic jams and dangerous situations. Existing cameras cannot fully monitor the various speed limits set for heavy goods vehicles and passenger cars.
Experts suggest that, alongside the introduction of AI technology, traffic rules should be reevaluated. Specifically, it is proposed to strictly restrict trucks and buses to the first and second lanes on motorways, while reserving the third lane for passenger cars.
This would increase road capacity and reduce driver stress. AI cameras will force drivers to behave more orderly.
For instance, applying penalty points for offenses like not wearing a seatbelt or using a phone while driving will increase driver attentiveness. According to experienced specialists, even minor penalty points encourage drivers to monitor their speed and pay more attention to vehicle safety systems.
However, technology cannot solve everything. For example, fairly punishing habits like driving in the middle of the road or failing to move left using AI remains a complex challenge.
In such cases, direct involvement of road patrol officers is required. In the future, possible changes on British roads could include raising the speed limit for passenger cars and motorcycles to up to 130 km/h, while restricting trucks to the outer lanes only.
These measures are seen as the most effective way to restore order on the roads.
