According to gardener and landscape designer Olga Voronova, flowers and medicinal plants can serve as excellent "guards" for your harvest. For example, marigolds, nasturtiums, and calendulas repel insects.
Different plants can be planted with various crops. Marigolds fight against cabbage beetles, so it is recommended to plant them next to cabbage. Black beans do not attract Colorado beetles to potatoes, while nasturtium protects crops from harmful fungi.
“These three classic flowers are 100 percent effective,” says the expert.
Additionally, rosemary, monarda, and other fragrant medicinal plants can also be good neighbors for garden crops. The pleasant scent they emit protects the plants from insects. Pollin also has the same effect, but it doesn’t have to be found growing naturally; it can also be specially planted in the garden.
To place all the plants beautifully and wisely, Olga Voronova recommends planning a separate area for flowers and medicinal plants in advance.
