A boat carrying migrants capsized on Sunday off the shores of Abyan province in southern Yemen. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
There were approximately 150 people on the boat, most of whom are believed to be Ethiopian citizens. Due to heavy rain and wind, the boat overturned, resulting in the deaths of more than 50 people.
Only 10 people were rescued, while dozens more are missing. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) commented on this tragedy, emphasizing the need to strengthen safety measures for migrants.
According to the organization, 54 bodies were found in the Khanfar district of Abyan province, and another 14 people were taken to the morgue of a hospital in the provincial center. Officials stated that extensive search and rescue operations are ongoing along the coast.
Local security services announced that they would not stop the search for the missing. This tragedy has once again highlighted the dangers present in illegal migration routes.
Yemen is a key transit route for thousands of migrants seeking work in the Gulf states from East Africa. Over 60,000 migrants have arrived in the country during 2024.
In the last decade, more than 3,400 people have died or gone missing on this route, with 1,400 of them losing their lives due to drowning. This situation indicates that illegal migration is a serious problem.
