Texas Governor Greg Abbott has filed a lawsuit in the Supreme Court to dismiss Democratic lawmakers who aimed to halt the plan to change electoral boundaries in favor of Republicans. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
He is particularly suing Jin Vu, one of the leaders of the Democratic Party, on the charge of "attempting to seize the government." According to Abbott, the departure of more than 50 Democratic lawmakers from the state and their failure to return to the session constitutes abandonment of their duties, which can serve as grounds for their dismissal.
The issue is being examined in court through a rarely used legal tool known as "quo warranto." This tool is aimed at determining the legal entitlement of an official to their position.
The lawsuit demands the removal of lawmakers who have committed crimes, particularly Jin Vu, from their positions. Supporters of the Republic aim to continue the session in this way and change the electoral boundaries.
Jin Vu, however, considers such actions a violation of constitutional rights and emphasizes that his absence from the session is a form of political protest and a defense of the law. Currently, the Texas Supreme Court is reviewing the case, and a decision is expected to be announced before the Friday session.
All the judges are from the Republican Party, and the chief judge has previously been Abbott's legal advisor. This raises questions about the potential political bias of the court's decision.
