The British government has requested clarification from China regarding the reasons for the concealment of certain plans for the new Chinese embassy planned to be built in central London. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
Angela Rayner, the Minister for Housing and Local Government and Deputy Prime Minister, sent an official letter to the Chinese government demanding a response by August 20. The Chinese government purchased the former Royal Mint Court area for £255 million in 2018.
If the project is approved, it will become the largest Chinese embassy in Europe, with plans for a cultural center and accommodation for 200 staff members. However, some official drawings have been redacted, and information about confidential rooms has not been provided.
Due to the new embassy's proximity to London's financial center, serious concerns about espionage and security are emerging. Local residents are worried that the construction of the embassy could lead to protests and unrest.
Additionally, human rights activists, particularly representatives from Hong Kong, Tibet, and Xinjiang, have stated that this building could be used as a tool for political pressure and persecution. The Chinese embassy emphasizes that this building will serve to strengthen friendship and cooperation between the two countries.
The final decision is expected to be made by September 9. The British government has indicated that if some modifications are made to the plans, there is a possibility of approving the project.
