Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban once again obstructed the joint declaration planned to be adopted by the European Union countries regarding Ukraine.
On March 20, Orban announced his position via Twitter:
“Veto! Enough! We ask the Hungarian people about Ukraine's EU membership. Until then, we cannot support any common position on this issue,” wrote the Hungarian Prime Minister.
European Union's Position
The leaders of 26 EU member states adopted a supportive declaration for Ukraine. According to AFP, the document calls for the EU to strengthen actions to meet Ukraine's urgent military and defense needs.
According to the initiative of the EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, the EU plans to allocate 5 billion euros for artillery ammunition for Ukraine.
The document also mentions support for Ukraine's reforms on its path to EU membership.
Orban has been blocking EU military aid decisions
Viktor Orban has previously blocked or delayed EU decisions regarding Ukraine.
The Politico publication reported on March 4 that the Hungarian government obstructed the EU's approval of a new 20 billion euro military aid package for Ukraine.
This decision occurred before a meeting between US President Donald Trump and Vladimir Zelensky on February 28.
On February 21, Politico, citing EU diplomats, wrote that a 20 billion euro military aid package was being developed, but due to Hungary's opposition, these funds might be provided not from the EU's common fund but by individual states.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban continues to disagree with the European Union on the Ukraine issue. He believes that it is necessary to consult with the Hungarian people before making a decision on EU membership.
This situation could seriously affect the EU's plans to assist Ukraine and accelerate Kyiv's integration process. EU members are striving to increase military and financial support for Ukraine, but Hungary is currently obstructing this process.
