At least 60 people have died and more than 200 are missing due to floods and landslides caused by heavy rainfall in the Kashmir region of India, Zamin.uz reported.
According to witnesses, after a loud noise, a large amount of water and mud flooded the village. Some were swept into the Chenab River, while others were trapped under fallen rocks and mud.
Rescuers continue search operations in designated areas using ropes and temporary bridges. Official data indicates that over 100 people have been injured in addition to those who died.
Due to the mountainous terrain of the region, such natural disasters occur frequently. However, scientists emphasize that the number and intensity of such events are increasing as a result of climate change.
This incident occurred shortly after similar floods and landslides took place in the state of Uttarakhand less than a week ago. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that many natural disasters have occurred across the country in recent days.
At the same time, heavy rains, floods, and landslides have caused significant casualties in Nepal and Pakistan as well. In Nepal, 41 people have died, while in Pakistan, more than 50 people lost their lives in rain-related incidents overnight.
Natural disasters pose a great threat to the lives of the local population. Rescue and relief efforts are ongoing.
