The spread of the dangerous Vibrio vulnificus bacteria is significantly increasing in the coastal states of the USA. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
According to the publication "The Daily Tribune," this bacteria has fully occupied the country's popular beaches, posing a serious threat to public health. According to data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the infection is widespread in 11 states including Florida and Louisiana, where 20 and 17 patient deaths have been recorded respectively.
Vibrio vulnificus bacteria are active in warm salty water and mainly enter the human body through consumption of raw seafood or open wounds. In one out of every five cases, the infection can become life-threatening within 48 hours.
Experts link the spread of this bacteria to global climate change. Rising water temperatures create favorable conditions for the rapid multiplication of the bacteria.
Initial symptoms of the disease include vomiting, diarrhea, itching on the skin, or the appearance of blisters. The risk group includes people with weakened immunity, young and elderly individuals, as well as those suffering from chronic diseases.
The CDC urges the public to avoid entering seawater with open wounds, to thoroughly cook seafood, and to seek immediate medical help if unpleasant symptoms appear after contact with seawater. In recent years, this spread is considered the second largest case in the USA.
In 2023, similar bacterial infection cases were also recorded in North Carolina and Texas. Experts call on the public to remain vigilant and cautious and to pay increased attention when consuming seafood.
