Special cameras capable of identifying people's ethnic origin have been launched in Saint Petersburg, Russia. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
According to Igor Nikonov, Deputy Chairman of the Information Committee, this technology identifies people's national affiliation and helps monitor their gatherings in various parts of the city. This new system provides law enforcement agencies with additional opportunities to maintain public order.
Igor Nikonov emphasized that the system can identify six different ethnic groups, and appropriate measures will be taken based on the analysis of their gatherings. Oleg Kapitanov, head of the Interethnic Relations Committee, described this system as a statistical analysis tool and evaluated it as effective in ensuring security at various events.
By 2025, it is planned to equip 8,000 cameras in Saint Petersburg with the ethnic identification function. Additionally, a new project is being considered that will allow comparison of foreign citizens' personal data, photographs, and residence permits.
It has been reported that more than 700 crimes have been solved in the city with the help of this system. The technology is expected to play an important role in maintaining public order and preventing crimes.
However, debates continue regarding its impact on individuals' privacy and how it will affect interethnic relations. Time will be needed to observe how the new system influences the integration process in society.
