
Moldova celebrated the 34th anniversary of its independence declaration on August 27. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
At the invitation of the country's president Maia Sandu, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, French President Emmanuel Macron, and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk visited the celebrations. Their visit took place within the framework of the Weimar Triangle, aimed at further strengthening cooperation among these three countries.
The visit held political significance as it occurred one month before the parliamentary elections. Starting from 16:00, the European leaders held a brief meeting at Sandu's residence.
These talks lasted three hours, causing a slight delay in the schedule. Maia Sandu and the guests arrived at the central square at 21:00.
There, thousands of people warmly welcomed them with applause. During Sandu's speech, people chanted her name, creating a festive atmosphere.
At the press conference, Friedrich Merz emphasized that the first phase of negotiations on Moldova's accession to the European Union would begin this autumn. He announced Berlin's readiness to send experts to support the necessary reforms.
Additionally, Merz expressed a clear position on Moldova's security issues, affected by the war started by Russia, noting that the war must end as soon as possible. Emmanuel Macron recognized the reforms in the judiciary and administrative governance in Moldova as part of the preparation for EU membership.
Paris stated its readiness to support Chișinău not only through Europe but also via bilateral projects. Donald Tusk stressed that there can be no secure European Union without an independent and secure Moldova.
Thus, the visit within the Weimar Triangle framework concluded. The festive evening in central Chișinău was remembered for warm support and clear statements.
This meeting is expected to further develop cooperation between Moldova and Europe.
