Political instability in Nepal is escalating further. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
On September 9, protesters gathered in front of the personal residence of the country’s Prime Minister Sharma Oli in Balkot, demanding that he be held accountable for the deaths that occurred during yesterday’s clashes. A few hours later, the protesters set the residence on fire.
This was reported by the “India Today” publication. According to “The Himalayan Times,” the protesters’ anger intensified to an uncontrollable level.
They held the Prime Minister responsible and raised mass slogans in front of his residence. When the residence was engulfed in flames, the police used tear gas to disperse the protesters.
Shooting sounds were also heard at that time. As the situation escalated, government members were evacuated to a safe area with the help of military helicopters.
Additionally, the homes of several government officials were also victims of fire. The threat level was raised in Nepal’s capital, and Kathmandu International Airport was temporarily closed.
All flights were canceled. According to reports, the mass protests intensified following the ban on major social media platforms in the country – Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and YouTube.
Although the government recently lifted this ban, public anger did not subside. Officials reported that at least 19 people died in the clashes yesterday and today.
Following mass pressure and unrest, Prime Minister Sharma Oli resigned from his position. Observers believe that the events in Nepal have seriously tested the country’s political system.
Trust in the authorities has decreased, and the banning of social networks has intensified the protests. The measures taken did not help stabilize the situation.
Nepal’s political processes may enter a new phase.
