The Peruvian parliament has declared impeachment against President Dina Boluarte due to rising crime and political instability in the country. This was reported by Zamin.uz.
According to Diario Gestion, 122 members of congress voted unanimously to remove the president from office. No one opposed or abstained.
Parliament members cited Boluarte's moral incapacity as the reason. In their view, the head of state failed to resolve the political and social crisis, was involved in corruption, and lost public trust.
The document emphasized the high level of organized crime in the country, low citizen security, and an increase in the number of murders. Peru's Prime Minister Eduardo Arana stated that the government will accept the congress's decision.
Dina Boluarte did not attend the session. She had been serving as president since December 2022.
Following the impeachment, the parliament speaker José Geri was appointed as the new president. He is 38 years old and has been the head of congress since July.
In September, mass protests took place in Peru. Citizens were dissatisfied with the government's inability to combat crime, pension reforms, and inefficiency in fighting corruption.
Thus, political instability in the country has intensified, and restoring security and trust stands as a crucial task for the new president.
